Salary survey highlights value of CILEX route
Nearly 60% of respondents started their CILEX journey with A-level qualifications or below, yet later in their careers their earnings matched degree-holders, highlighting the accessibility and value of the CILEX pathway.
Over 2,000 respondents completed the CILEX salary survey, with 92% saying they were satisfied with their career progression. Salaries were found to rise significantly with each membership grade – from an average of £32,233 for students to nearly £59,000 for practising Fellows and CILEX Lawyers.
Some partners and firm owners were earning upwards of £100,000, demonstrating the financial rewards of career progression with each step up in responsibility bringing a meaningful uplift in salary.
The findings illustrated the benefit of holding practice rights, with CILEX Fellows holding them earning 15% more on average than those without.
The survey also highlighted areas for improvement, with the findings demonstrating a widening gender pay gap – 25% of men were out-earning women in senior roles.
There were also disparities between ethnic groups, with Asian and Mixed ethnicity members earning up to £5,000 less at key career stages.
CILEX President Sara Fowler said: “This year’s survey shows the growing value and opportunities of the CILEX route, but also the inequality we must continue to challenge. We remain committed to championing equity, diversity and inclusion across the legal profession.”
