Stress and anxiety top reason for seeking LawCare’s support
LawCare, the mental health charity for the legal sector in the UK, have published figures for 2024 which show stress and anxiety was the most common reason for people reaching out for support.
In 2024, those working in the legal sector reached out for support 1,037 times – the highest number ever in a single year and a 24% increase on 2021.
LawCare’s 2024 impact report found 39% got in touch with stress and anxiety, 15% with career concerns and 10% with concerns about workplace bullying and harassment.
The charity’s live online webchat saw a 35% increase in 2024, as people move to alternative ways to get support, rather than speaking on the phone. CILEX is one of the charity’s funders.
LawCare said that “mental health remains a major challenge in the legal sector”, citing long hours, heavy workloads and high-pressure environments that are “still embedded in its culture”.
Elizabeth Rimmer, chief executive of LawCare, said that those working in the sector had “increasing courage to ask for help” amid the growing pressures in the sector.
“Behind every number is a person - a junior lawyer battling imposter syndrome, a lawyer facing burnout, a business support professional struggling with anxiety. These stories are why our work matters. Our goal is simple but vital: to create a legal sector where mental health is a priority and everyone can thrive."
